FIli accedens ad seruitutem Dei, sta in Iustitia
& timore & prepara animam tuam ad tenta-
tionem. Deprime cor tuum & sustine, & inclina
aurem tuam & excipe verba intellectus, & ne fe-
stines in tempus obductionis; sustine sustenta-
tiones Dei, coniungere Deo & sustine vt crescat
in nouissimo vita tua: omne quod tibi applicitum
fuerit, accipe, & in dolore sustine, & in humilitate
tuâ patientiam habe, quoniam in igne probatur
aurum & argentum, homines vero receptabiles
in camino humiliationis. Amor est quasi ignis
conflans & quasi herba fullonum: & sedebit con-
flans & emundans argentum & purgabit filios
Leui; excoquet ad purum scoriam tuam & aufe-
ret omne stannum cordis tui. Vret cor tuum sicut
vritur argentum, & probabit illud sicut probatur
aurum: beatus vir qui suffert tentationem, quo-
niam cum probatus fuerit, accipiet coronam,
quam repromisit Deus diligentibus se.

Biscuit de l'Amour.
XIII.
Qu' il est ioly ce diuin boulanger:
Mais croyéz vous, qu' il oseroit manger
Ce cœur, qu' il cuit au milieu de son four?
Cela s'entend: car il à tousiours fain;
Et ne se paist iamais que de ce pain,
Qu' il cuit luy mesme au feu de son Amour.

Translations
Love of the highest purity.4 |
My son, if thou come to serve the Lord, prepare thy soul for temptation. Set thy heart aright, and constantly endure, and
make not haste in time of trouble. Cleave unto him, and depart not away, that thou mayest be increased at thy last end. Whatsoever
is brought upon thee take cheerfully, and be patient when thou art changed to a low estate. For gold is tried in the fire,
and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity. Love is like a refiner's fire and like fullers soap. It will sit as a refiner
and purifier of silver, and it will purify the descendants of Levi.5 It will smelt away your dross6 as with lye and remove all the alloy of your heart.7 It will prove by fire your heart just like silver is tested. And its quality will be established just like that of silver
is: happy the man who endures temptation, because once his quality is proven, he will receive the crown God promised in return
to those who love Him. |
Like gold in the furnace. |
