Op de pictura wijst Cupido naar de zon die de maan in het laatste kwartier verlicht; op het achterplan een man met een handspiegel die een vrouw aankijkt. Dit eenvoudig zonne-embleem vertolkt een van de meest gangbare beelden uit de renaissancistische liefdeslyriek. Het is een variante van de emblemata VII (Gheen ben ick sonder u [7]) en XI (Zy blinckt, en doet al blincken [11]) met welke laatste pictura het nog de lichtweerkaatsende spiegel gemeen heeft; de man houdt een spiegel vast om zijn afhankelijkheid van de licht- en levenscheppende geliefde uit te drukken. De voorstelling is te vergelijken met een impresa van Bargagli, met het motto ’Receptum exhibet’ (Het ontvangene doet hij - de spiegel - verschijnen).¹
